It is official

I've known for a little while, but it is feeling more and more real this week. They have had some problems getting me set up, but it is official now! Woohoo!

You will soon be finding my stuff at Natural Designs in Scrapbooking (NDISB) and 3Scrapateers.

You can find my NDISB store here. There is nothing in there yet.

They are still working on getting my store set up at 3Scrapateers. Soon though, I hope.

You can also still find my stuff at The Shaker Box.

I have decided to alter my Terms of Use a little bit. Those of you who are interested in Scrap 4 Hire use will find these new terms to your liking.

This product was created by Stacey Sansom. You can find information about Stacey, specials, new products, and where to purchase products at Stacey's Digital Scrapbook Creations and/or Stacey Sansom Digital Scrapbook Designs (http://digiscrapcreations.blogspot.com). I keep the list of where to buy my products updated on my blog, so if in doubt look there.

This product is SCRAP FOR HIRE friendly.

You MAY USE this product for personal use and/or scrap for hire use. This includes, but is not limited to: scrapbook layouts, flyers, brochures, cards, etc. You may use this product to create items for others so long as they are given as gifts in either a flattened, single layer digital file (finished product) or printed format. If you're wanting to get started with digital scrapbooking, you're probably wondering just what you need. First and foremost, you need software to work with. Now, some of you might already have something that is sufficient for your needs (especially at this stage) and should attempt to work with this.

What kind of software do you need?

• supports layers
• supports transparency
• supports JPG and PNG images formats
• allows drop shadow creation

Layer support is important because it makes life so much easier. Just like a physical paper scrapbook page, you layer things onto a base piece of paper or card stock. You'll do the same in digital scrapbooking. The easier you make this on yourself, the better. So find something that allows you to see your layers in some sort of layers palette. This may not seem like much, but you can easily select the layer and get to work and it makes life easier in the long run.

Transparency support is important because many of the embellishment files have clear parts around the actual item itself. If your program does not support transparency, you'll have to cut this white area out of your layout before you use it. Might as well have it already gone. Most newer programs will support this without questions. I know that Photoshop 5, Photoshop Elements 2, and Fireworks 1 had no or spotty transparency support. These are much older versions of the programs so not to worry so much about if you're in the market for software.

JPG and PNG image format support is important because this is the standard format you will find your digital scrapbook supplies in. Often you'll find templates in PSD or TIFF format, but that's only relevant if you are going to use templates. You can recreate layouts from templates without having to import them into the layout in your program. They become more of a "sketch" then, but still the concept is the same. Often you'll find some templates as multiple PNG files that you simply layer back together. To get started, however, you simply need to have a program that will support the image format for the embellishments and papers. Typically papers are in JPG format. Embellishments and alphas are typically in PNG format due to their need of transparency around the items. PNG provide better quality transparent images than the GIF format.

Drop shadow creation is important because this will help add depth and realism to your digital layouts. These can be done either via the program settings or manually. Either is acceptable. To create a shadow manually, you'll need to have a feature that allows you to "blur" a shape or provides you with a soft brush to brush in the shadows yourself. Remember that often your embellishments do not come with shadows already on them so this is something you can't ignore if you want a layout with a bit of realism to it.

What programs do I recommend for beginners? I don't have a preference so long as you are comfortable with your program. I firmly believe that anyone can learn to use a certain program if they put their heart and soul into it. They really have to want to learn it, however. There are a couple of popular programs that are good for the "beginner" and those I have posted here:

Jasc Paint Shop Pro

Amazon is currently offering Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 for $39.99. This is a great price! I am not real certain about the finer workings of Paint Shop Pro as I have only used it on passing. I have a friend who uses it and really liked it. I've seen some neat things come out of PSP.

Anyway, I just wanted to share these deals for those that are wanting to get started, but not sure they want to invest a lot of money for trying it.

Keep in mind, that you are not limited to these 2 options. I personally use full-blown Photoshop. You can use desktop publishing software as well. So there are lots of possibilities out there.

An informal announcement!

I have been on the search for additional stores to go into with my designs.

I am pleased to announce that you will soon find my stuff at 3 Scrapateers! How exciting is that?!?! I have to create 2 kits for them before they'll let me in the door, but I've picked my colors and I have some ideas, so soon (maybe) I'll be found at 3 Scrapateers in addition to The Shaker Box.

For those of you who are into hybrid scrapping, The Shaker Box will be expanding in this area. They are also going to be expanding their digital department. Now you can have the best of 3 different worlds – Paper, Digital, and Hybrid. You'll still be able to get their fabulous paper kits, but now they'll have more. You will be able to find MORE of my creations at The Shaker Box very soon.

I am still trying to decide on a 3rd store. I have 3 more to pick from. Meaning, I have been selected to join their store, but I haven't decided if it is the one for me. I really wish Theresa at NDISB would get back with me. *grin*

I've been using my new "logo" since August and I decided it was well past time I actually use it on my blog. Be on the look out for more changes to the blog as I am going to update it slowly over the next few weeks. Remember, change is good!

After I was eliminated from the Digital Scrapbook Place Designer Finder Contest after only round 3, I really took it hard. Was I really cut out for this? I was starting to wonder. There was no explanation as to why I was eliminated. My friends could not understand it either when looking at all the contestants. They were floored. It really made mad, at the same time it made me question my ability.

Alas, it wouldn't keep me down forever. With all the health issues, I let it get me down a bit longer than I should have. By Christmas, however, I was ready to start taking on the digital scrapbooking world. I decided that this would be a good year for me. I wouldn't let anyone's decision in some contest get me down anymore. I also wouldn't let the economy get me down. I did the math and I had a 90% decrease of income from 2007 to 2008. There were a lot of factors that went into this that I will not get into here.

I am determine that 2009 is going to be a much better year.

So far...to date...it has been. I have been regrouping my thoughts and really letting the ideas take center stage. Over the next couple of months I will be working hard to make some of the ideas realities. Keep an eye out for what I've got up my sleeve for 2009!

I am sorry for the absence. I was having a lot of health issues and it finally got to the point where updating the blog was just too much to bear looking at. I had my gall bladder removed the 2nd week in December and I am glad that I did. Then on into the holidays. I feel so much better today than I did a month ago!

Now, I am digging my way out from under the whole backlog of things to get done.

I thought I would start by updating the blog and let you all know what is going on. Not much right this second. I am merely regrouping my thoughts and planning my approach to digital scrapbook design in 2009.

I've decided that this year is going to be the year of FOCUS. I am going to have focus areas and those are the areas where I will work. These can change throughout the year, so don't be surprised. I have a lot of ideas swimming around in my head and it is time that they quit swimming and start gracing the digital world with their reality. So look forward to lots of new things from me this year! I can't wait to get started.

I'm on the search for more "visibility" in the digital world. I am not sure as to what this will entail as of right now. I just know I want to be seen more. I am currently looking at a variety of storefront options for selling my good. I'll keep you abreast as to what all transforms from these efforts.

The latest kit

My latest kit "Softly Winter" is now done!

This kit was designed as the digital add-on kit for the monthly kit club at The Shaker Box. As of right now, it has not been added to the store yet, but it should be available soon. I hear that there will be some changes coming soon over there, so keep an eye out for those.

Scrapping is therapeutic

I've spent some time scrapping as well. I still haven't finished my grandparents' Christmas gift, but I am working on it. That's what I've been working like a mad woman on. It is coming together nicely, but I'll be honest, I should have gotten started sooner. My goal is to have it finished by the end of the month.

Well I've submitted my Round 3 Entry for the Digital Scrapbook Place Designer Finder Contest. That was hard work. We had to create specific elements to go with the papers created in Part 2 of Round 2. We had to create a bow with ties, frame, and flower. We also had to create a metal element (it could be one of the "must have" elements) or just one of the 8 required for the kit.

This is my nephew. This was not an easy scrap...not because there is anything wrong...simply because I did not consider that I'd want the 3 layouts to match (use the same kit) when I started. The kit is purely pinks, orange, and green! Good thing there was orange and green to use.

For those that are following the blog updates: The blog redesign is coming together nicely. I am making slow but steady progress. Products have been added to their own "Products" page and "Add to cart" buttons have been added to them. I will add more as time allows or as I create more products.

My goal this summer is to just scrapbook more than I have been. I've been stuck in the designing mode and everything has been...design...design...design...Even then I haven't been as productive in that area either though I have created new products over the past few months. This summer, however, I am going to scrap...for me...for the kids...That being said, I have done exactly that the past couple of days.

I have received news that Dragonflaire Studios is shutting down come the end of June. It is a sad thing. I loved Dragonflaire Studios. Unfortunately, Maggie can't afford to keep it open anymore. :( My heart goes out to her. This is just a tough market to survive in.

That being said, I am not sure what I will be doing after the end of the month. I will still be selling, but I am not sure where at. I am currently looking for a new store.

I've been busily working to get new stuff up. Unfortunately, Seaside Scraps has closed it doors forever so my products are currently only available at Dragonflaire Studios.

New paper packs:

This has been in the works for a while now, but I haven't had enough time to get it finished. It took off this past week. Simple but bold and showy is the purpose of this collection. When all parts are complete (yes, there is more to come) it will be called the "Wildflowers" collection. When the full collection is complete, you will still be able to get them individually or as a collection.

While these are not new kits, they are being uploaded to my store as they never made it there when I moved to Dragonflaire Studios.

I don't normally do quick pages, but I started these many months ago and finally finished them. I hope to complete some more with some of my larger kits soon so keep an eye out for them.

I've been scrapping with "Summer Delights"

Lance was out playing in the sandbox. This is actually normal for him. This day, however, he caught my eye. Normally, he is content to get as dirty as possible. We had some rain the night before and I don't usually prevent him from his outside time regardless of the rain. He'll wash after all. I had gone out to check on him and saw him not sitting...rolling...laying...in the sandbox, simply...squatting...I stood there smiling...listening...I couldn't resist, I stepped back in the house and grabbed the camera. The words were precious, "Hey, don't put your sand on me" as he threw sand on the toy dinosaur and quickly covered him up. He unburied him again, and repeated. "Look mommy, I found a dinosaur!" His excitement was infectious.

My latest paper pack

I am not 100% sure that this will always stay a paper pack as I've got some ideas for elements in my head, but I am releasing the papers right now. I really need to finish something right now - something other than homework and housework.

I just have to finish zipping up the pack and upload to the store. It will be found at Dragonflaire Studios.

It has come a long way from the preview I showed earlier. It contains 4 solid papers in the 4 different colors. There is a striped pattern in the 4 different colors as well as 2 muted versions of a couple of them (for those that like their colors a bit more toned down). Then it also includes 3 additional patterned papers in 4 different colors. All together there are 22 sheets of digital paper.

I got disappointing news

I found out this week that one of the stores that I sell in will be closing their doors soon. Seaside Scraps will be closing up shop on May 22, 2008. I am sad, but I totally understand their reasons. Everything in the store will be 50% off until that date.

My concern lays in the fact that I am not 100% certain about the future of the other store either. The forums have been dead for weeks now. It appears that the economy as a whole is affecting every aspect of our lives.

Somehow, even with the sad news, I have been able to finish another paper pack. Go me! My plan tomorrow is to scrap and decide just which 3 universities I am going to pick from to pursue a BA in Visual Communications.

It has been a while since I have done any designing or even updated this blog. I am sorry for that. I have been truly busy with school and kids and life in general.

That being said, I just really want to scrap. I want to design some more too. There is some stuff in the works, but I've another another week of classes before I can crank out new fresh product.

I couldn't just leave you all hanging on the whole CD Case calendar. I've had some interest on how to make them and I wanted to be sure to post a finished product so you could see just how useful they are. I LOVE them!

I couldn't take it anymore. I finally just went and sat down at the PC simply to use Photoshop and Illustrator. Let me tell you I was suffering from serious withdraw! I was up until 2:45AM this morning as a result. BUT in all fairness. . . I did get something done while working way into the wee hours of the morning. Yay! I even got my MacBook Pro backed up to the backup drive (I think), so hopefully soon I will have Windows installed on there and can have Photoshop back again (at least until I can afford the CS3 suite).

I'll add the rest as I get them done today. I am working diligently!!! I hope to have them all done today.

I really need to get on the ball and get some gifts done.

Things I am thinking about doing:

Shutterfly book for my grandmother with the pictures from the family reunion in July. Nothing fancy, just slap the pictures in.

CD Case calendars with big pictures! I want it to be quick and mass reproduce-able. So, that meas I need to get my camera out and get the kids in at least matching shirts and shoot a TON of pictures. I mean, I need 12 pictures of the 3 of them together. I think it will be fun.

Custom calendars would be nice too. Little bit more work, but fun.

Travel Mugs? Design the inserts.

Checkbook Calendars. I found them for $1 at Michaels. I want to design covers for them for people.

There are things that are not scrapbook related that I want to try and accomplish. Two of the kids have asked for sweaters. *shrug* We live in Texas for crying out loud! But I do have a knitting machine so sweaters shouldn't be too difficult, right? We'll see. I also want to try and make a quilt or two.

I like the whole "know what you're getting before you buy it" concept. I'll be back at it again

I know it has been at least a couple of months since I released a new product. I just wanted to let everyone know that I will be back at it again soon. We're in the process of trying to get Photoshop on my Mac running via VMFusion. Hopefully, it will run efficiently enough that I can get something DONE. I just haven't been able to do anything with Fireworks as it takes forever. It is not efficient at all on the Intel Macs. Keep your eyes open, I'll release something soon.

I found out last night that another designer will be quitting. There is nothing official yet, but I am sad. It just goes to show how difficult it can be to make it in this business. If I didn't love it, I wouldn't be doing it. It certainly doesn't pay the bills. I don't think that it ever will. Anyway, I am sad for my friend. I am sorry she'll be giving it up. On another note, I am happy that she's trying her hand at something else that hopefully she'll love and enjoy even more!

They kept bugging me for an "about me" layout for the site at Dragonflaire Studios. I don't have many pictures of myself, so that was the first part of the challenge right there. I don't like the pictures I do have. That is another issue all together. It isn't so bad now that I have lost 20# but I am not glad to post pictures everywhere. I guess it just means that I'll have to update the page once I get newer pictures. The last part was "what do I do?" I didn't know! I started over at least 10 times.

This picture was taken in April by my son, Andrew. I like the picture simply because he took it! The papers in this layout are from my "Basic Shades" paper pack. The doodles are yet to be released. The font used is Bradley Hand.

The Shaker Box has a monthly kit club

A smaller site that many of you might not be aware of is The Shaker Box. It is a very friendly environment for both digital and traditional scrappers alike (and everything in between). If you haven't been there, you should go check it out.

They have started offering a "Monthly Kit Club." I just checked out the information on it and it is exciting stuff. The description says that it is full of stuff for all types of scrapbookers - digital, hybrid, and traditional paper. Interesting! Information about the kit club is on the front page of the site.

Back from vacation

Our trip to Wisconsin was awesome! We all had a lot of fun. It is hard to get back into the groove after having an awesome vacation, so I've been slow in posting. I hope that over the next few weeks I'll get back into that groove as the kids' schedules return back to the "normal" schedules as they return to school.

Happy 4th of July!

I hope everyone is enjoying their 4th of July holidays and eating lots of BBQ and gorging themselves on potato salad and all the fixings. . . what else would you do on 4th of July? *innocent look* We're not doing a whole lot, actually. We'll probably do some bratwurst. My husband is taking the two older boys to see Transformers. I think I'll head to the store and get some hot dog buns while they are gone. If it doesn't rain, there will likely be some yard work that is done today. I need to get some design work done. Just not a whole lot going on. The weather is too yucky for too much to be happening. We're getting rain, yet again!

I have decided that I just have a problem naming the kits when the ideas come easily. They aren't so hard to name when I spend 2-3 months working on a kit. It is the quick ones that really get me.

I have been busy working on a new kit the past few days. It has been a real challenge because I do not have Photoshop installed on my Mac yet. I installed the trial for Photoshop Elements 3. Yeah, I know it is an old version, but it was the only trial I could find for PSE. So between Fireworks and Photoshop Elements, I have managed to put together a simple kit. That was the goal. Simple! I think I have accomplished that. It is time for me to call it done.

I'll have it uploaded to my 3 stores soon (Dragonflaire Studios, Seaside Scraps, and Digi by Design). One of them is in the process of a server move so I will upload them to each store the same day. Besides, I still have to figure out how I am going to price it. That might be important! But I am excited about it.

A casual walk through

So this evening I walked through the local scrapbook store that is just a couple of doors down from the kids' karate place. They were open and it is getting too hot to sit in the car and scrap on my computer like I usually do. Since I arrived at the karate place early, I thought I'd just wander through the scrapbook store and have a "browse" before I head in to sit with my laptop at the karate place. That's where I am now. Great idea! I have to say, I was rather bored. It was a crowded little shop. At least the isles at Hobby Lobby or Wal-mart or Michael's aren't this crowded! I wanted to just touch the paper. Touch it. Feel it. The whole texture thing.

I had previously talked to a friend of ours about how much it would set me back to print some of these digital designs I spend so much time on. He owns a printing business. He was talking a textured linen paper. Higher end, etc. I need to sit down with him with a couple of papers that are typical for scrapbooking and just have a discussion with him about the whole thing. The whole this is what I need/want conversation. Unfortunately, you can't get by with less than runs of 1000 sheets. Yikes! You'd have to be willing to (1) set down some cash and (2) be prepared to bite the loss if it doesn't sell. At least, that would be the case for a whole paper pack. I'll have to keep thinking about that some. Get more details. It was my husband's crazy thought for me to talk to this friend in the first place.

I have another friend of ours who used to own some paper scrapbook stores a few years ago. I need to talk to her about things too. She wants me to show her how to do the whole digital scrapbooking thing. I am excited about that. I will have to get with her soon. But looking at it from a designer standpoint. . . I want to know what it takes to get into the stores and other things. You never know, I might venture and partner with her in something of this nature on a digital level. I don't know. Just thinking out loud here. I haven't talked to her about what she did and how she did it, etc. I need to have that conversation before I have crazy thoughts about other possible ventures.

But I have digressed from the whole local scrapbook store adventure I had this evening. I didn't feel any pangs of lust and desire when I was in there. I didn't feel the need to buy anything. I didn't see any spectacular papers that I just had to have. I found some solids that had some very nice texture to them. I just wasn't super impressed. I don't know if it was that particular store or if I have officially lost all desire to scrapbook in the "traditional paper" format.

The realization is that I really do enjoy what I do - digitally! I LOVE IT! Digital is the way to go! I was looking at the papers and the kits and stickers and embellishments and the alphas and. . . and. . . and. . . I was delighted with my own creations. I do create things that people want even if they don't sell well yet. I really need to get some serious marketing going on. I think Kat needs to really do some market research for me and find out where and when to advertise and whatnot. She is my lone Creative Team member and has been appointed my Creative Director.

I walked into a scrapbook store and did not buy one single thing. *doing the digital happy dance*
